If you are shopping for a Braun, the useful question is not which one is cheapest but which series matches your beard — and how much you want to pay for comfort and easy cleaning. Braun made its name on foil shavers, and its numbered series step up in cutting elements, head flexibility and convenience. Here is what actually changes from Series 3 to Series 9, and which one suits which shaver.
Foil, not rotary: what that means for you
Every Braun in this guide is a foil shaver. A thin metal screen traps each hair while a blade behind it cuts, so you use straight, overlapping passes rather than the small circles a rotary shaver wants. Foils tend to suit shorter or finer hair and a more linear routine, and many people find them gentler on the neck than a rotary head. If you are still deciding between the two systems, our general guide to choosing an electric razor covers that fork first.
What the series numbers actually mean
Going up a Braun series is not simply “better” — it is more capable and more convenient, at a higher price and often a bulkier stand. Four things change:
- Cutting elements. The entry Series 3 uses three moving elements; the Series 9 Pro uses five synchronised ones. More elements generally mean more hairs captured per pass.
- Head flexibility. Higher series flex and pivot further to follow the jaw and neck, so you press less and irritate less.
- Beard-density sensing. From Series 7 upward, AutoSense adjusts motor power to how thick and dense your beard is, so the shave stays even without you slowing down.
- Cleaning and upkeep. The top models ship with a cleaning-and-charging station; the cheaper ones just need a rinse.
So the honest way to choose is by your beard and your tolerance for upkeep — not by buying the biggest number you can afford.
Best entry-level foil: Braun Series 3 ProSkin 3040s
Braun’s long-running budget foil. It has two SensoFoil foils plus a central trimmer — three independently moving cutting elements — and MicroComb technology that guides hair into the cutters. A rear precision trimmer handles sideburns. It runs up to 45 minutes on about an hour’s charge, with a five-minute quick charge, and it is waterproof for wet or dry use. Replacement foil and cutter cassettes are 32B or 32S.
Who it suits: a first foil shaver, or someone with shorter or finer hair who wants a low-cost, easy-to-rinse model without a cleaning dock. What you give up: fewer cutting elements and a fixed head, so it will not match the higher series on stubborn or longer growth.
Best mid-range: Braun Series 6 6020s SensoFlex
The step up that matters most for comfort: a SensoFlex swivel head that flexes to follow the contours of your face, so the foils keep contact without you pressing. It uses SensoFoil blades, is waterproof for wet or dry shaving, includes an integrated precision beard trimmer for edges and sideburns, and ships with a travel case. Its shaving system is 53B.
Who it suits: someone who wants the flexible-head comfort and wet/dry convenience of the higher series without paying for automatic cleaning. What you give up: no beard-density sensing and no cleaning station — you rinse it yourself.
Best all-rounder: Braun Series 7 7085cc
The value sweet spot for most people. A 360° Flex adaptive head and three Flex blades follow tricky areas, and AutoSense reads your beard’s thickness and density to adjust motor power, keeping each pass consistent. It adds three shave modes — Turbo, Gentle and Standard — plus a Smart LED display, is 100% waterproof for wet or dry use, and gives up to 60 minutes of runtime (about three weeks of shaves on one charge). The 7085cc kit includes Braun’s Clean & Charge station for cleaning, lubricating, drying and charging.
Who it suits: the reader who wants one shaver to do it all — flexible head, density sensing, mode choice and automatic cleaning — without the Series 9 price. What you give up: one fewer cutting element than the premium model, and the station needs cleaning cartridges.
Best premium: Braun Series 9 Pro 9477cc
Braun’s flagship foil. Five synchronised shaving elements work with a head-locking Precision Switch for those awkward patches, AutoSense adapts power to beard density, and a ProLift trimmer pre-cuts longer or flat-lying hairs before the foils reach them. Sonic technology adds 10,000 micro-vibrations a minute. It is waterproof for wet or dry use, and the kit is built around convenience: a PowerCase that adds roughly 50% more runtime (up to about 90 minutes) and a SmartCare Center that cleans, lubricates, dries and charges. Made in Germany.
Who it suits: anyone with dense or difficult growth who wants the most capable Braun and does not mind paying for the cleaning station and travel power case. What you give up: it is the most expensive option here, and its station needs cartridges like the Series 7.
Which Braun should you buy?
- Just want a cheap, reliable foil? Series 3 ProSkin 3040s.
- Want a flexible head and wet/dry comfort? Series 6 6020s SensoFlex.
- Want the best all-rounder with automatic cleaning? Series 7 7085cc.
- Have dense growth and want the flagship? Series 9 Pro 9477cc.
If none of the numbers mean much to you yet, work backward from your beard: finer, everyday stubble is happy on a Series 3 or 6; thicker, faster-growing or hard-to-reach growth justifies the Series 7 or 9.
How to get a better shave from a Braun
- Use straight, overlapping passes. It is a foil, so let the head glide up and down rather than scrubbing in circles.
- Do not press. Pressure flattens the skin and causes irritation without cutting closer; the flexible heads are there so you can ease off.
- Shave clean, not long. Foil heads work best on a day’s growth. For longer beards, trim first with the precision trimmer.
- Give your skin a week or two. Switching from a blade to an electric shaver commonly takes a couple of weeks of regular use before the skin settles.
- Keep the head clean. Rinse or brush the cutters so they are not clogged, and replace the foil and cutter as Braun recommends for your model.
The American Academy of Dermatology puts technique ahead of equipment: go with the grain, use light pressure, and stop chasing a perfectly smooth finish if your skin reacts. That holds for a Braun as much as for a blade.
Before you buy
Match the series to your beard and your appetite for upkeep, not to the biggest number on the box: Series 3 for a simple, low-cost foil; Series 6 for a flexible head and wet/dry comfort; Series 7 for density sensing and automatic cleaning at a fair price; Series 9 Pro for the most capable shave Braun makes.
