The Philips Norelco Multigroom 3000 MG3740/40 is a cordless all-in-one trimmer for men who want one tool to keep a beard tidy, edge a neckline, trim body hair and touch up a haircut — and who would rather not fuss over blade oil. It sits at the entry end of Philips’s All-in-One range, so expect simple, dependable trimming rather than the sensing motors and long runtimes of the higher series. If you want a close, smooth shave instead of a trim, this is the wrong tool.

Who it suits — and who should skip it

The 3000 is a value kit: a lot of attachments for the money, aimed at simple and occasional grooming rather than daily precision work.

Choose it if

  • you want one cordless trimmer for your beard, head and body instead of several tools;
  • you would rather not oil, clean or baby the blades;
  • you want a low-cost kit with many attachments and are happy with an entry-level motor.

Skip it if

  • you want smooth skin — a razor, not a trimmer, does that job (see our guide to electric razors for men);
  • you trim a dense or long beard every day and want a stronger motor and longer runtime;
  • you need fast charging or the extra features Philips keeps for its higher series.

What the kit actually is

Philips sells this as the Multigroom 3000 multipurpose trimmer, model MG3740/40. It is an All-in-One trimmer: a rechargeable handle that takes click-on cutting heads and length guards for hair on the head, face and body. Philips lists 13 pieces, including a nose-and-ear trimmer, so the set covers beard and stubble trimming, hair clipping and body grooming from a single handle.

What the pieces let you do

Because the heads and guards clip onto one handle, the same tool covers several jobs: beard and stubble trimming at the length you set with the guards, hair clipping on the head, and nose-and-ear trimming. Having them on one handle is the whole point of an all-in-one kit — you carry one tool and swap the attachments rather than buying a separate detail trimmer and hair clipper.

The blades: tempered steel, and why ‘no oil’ matters

The cutting blades are made from tempered steel reinforced with iron. Philips describes them as self-sharpening and non-corrosive, so the head can be rinsed under water without rusting — which is why the kit needs no blade oil. In practice that is one less maintenance step and no oily residue on your hands. Treat the “won’t dull” wording as the manufacturer’s description rather than a lifetime promise: no trimmer blade stays sharp forever, and a neglected head still cuts worse than a clean one.

Battery and everyday use

Philips rates the battery at up to 60 minutes of cordless trimming per charge, which is ample for weeks of short sessions, and the trimmer can be rinsed clean under the tap. This is the base model, though, so expect a plain charge-and-go routine rather than the quick-charge and long-runtime features Philips reserves for its higher All-in-One series.

Where it falls short

  • It trims, it does not shave. You get stubble cut to the length you set, not the smooth finish a foil or blade gives.
  • It is the entry model. Philips’s 5000, 7000 and 9000 series add pieces, longer runtimes, sensing features and longer warranties.
  • Length control comes from clip-on guards, so a precise fade takes more patience than it would with a dedicated detail trimmer.

How it compares with the higher series

Think of the MG3740/40 as the “does everything, competently” option. The 5000 and 7000 series add pieces, runtime and features, and the 9000 is Philips’s premium line. If your grooming is simple and occasional, the 3000 covers it. If you trim a dense or long beard daily, the extra power and sensing of a higher series is easier to live with. Not sure whether you need an all-in-one trimmer or a dedicated beard trimmer? Our guide to choosing a beard grooming tool walks through the trade-offs.

Philips positions the range in tiers, so the trade-offs are easy to see:

  • 3000 — this kit: entry level, 13 pieces, up to 60 minutes per charge, tempered-steel blades that need no oil.
  • 5000 — the next step up for complete styling, with more attachments.
  • 7000 — Philips’s precision tier, with more pieces and features (the MG7910/49 kit below is a 19-piece example).
  • 9000 — the premium line, with a stainless-steel blade system and up to six hours of runtime from a full charge.

If you want more pieces and power

The natural step up is Philips’s 7000-series kit. The MG7910/49 is a 19-piece all-in-one trimmer covering beard, head, hair, body and face — more attachments and a higher-tier build than the 3000, at a higher price. Choose it if you want one tool to do more, more often.

Before you buy

Check the current configuration and availability, and confirm the model number: Philips sells several Multigroom variants and the 3000 is the value one, so make sure you are buying the model you want. A trimmer sets the shape; a beard oil or balm keeps the hair and skin comfortable afterwards.
